Reno and Surroundings First on foot, then by horseback, stagecoach, railroad, automobile, and airplane, travelers have sought their fortunes in the Silver State, a land rich in beauty and natural resources. For centuries, the native peoples lived off the land, utilizing the available resources to survive in a challenging environment. Then explorers from the East discovered wealth in fur and minerals in the 1800s, and settlers followed, transforming the land for farming, ranching, and mining. Towns like Carson City, Gold Hill, Silver City, and Reno sprang up to house, feed, and entertain the influx of prospectors and their families. Men and women from around the world came to make their fortunes; most were fortunate to make a living. The area is rich in stories and characters that are part of the folklore of the American West.
Over the past 131 years, Reno has risen from a small town with a checkered past to the “biggest little city in the world,” with world-class entertainment, hotels, gaming, shopping, fine dining, and outdoor adventure. The downtown Riverwalk, along the Truckee River, offers unique shops, boutiques, and art galleries. Whitewater rafting, tubing, and canoeing are available within the city at Whitewater Park. Plan a visit to one of Reno’s museums, such as the Nevada Historical Society, the Nevada Museum of Art, or the National Automobile Museum. Those with a prospecting spirit will want to visit nearby Carson City or Gold Hill. But a trip to Reno would not be complete without experiencing the magnificence of Lake Tahoe, where azure skies are reflected in crystal clear, deep-blue waters, surrounded by tall pines on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Year-round recreational opportunities abound from leisurely bike paths to rock climbing, trail riding, and backcountry hunting and fishing.
