Columbus facility one of the 23 winners among 12,000 contractors

Columbus, OH—Once again, Battelle has been named a winner of the esteemed James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award.  It is the third year in a row that Battelle or one of its regional offices has won the award and the eighth overall.

After a thorough review by the U.S. Defense Security Service (DSS) at Battelle’s King Avenue, West Jefferson, Battelle Columbus Special Support Site and Blazer Parkway campuses, Battelle was awarded the prize for, among other things, the security program for its technology control plan, security education program, and information systems security.  The awards will be presented at the annual training seminar of the Society of Industrial Security Professionals on June 18, 2008 in Mashantucket, Conn.

This year the Cogswell Award was given to only 23 of 12,000 defense contractors that are subject to annual inspection, putting Battelle among the top .0019 percentile of contractors.  The Cogswell award is the most celebrated honor DSS can award to cleared industry.

The award criteria focus on principles of industrial security excellence.  Factors include establishing and maintaining a security program that far exceeds the basic National Industrial Security Program requirements; and providing leadership to other cleared facilities in establishing best practices while maintaining the highest standards for security.

The Cogswell Award selection process is rigorous. A DSS Industrial Security Representative may only nominate facilities that have at a minimum two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings and which show a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in their overall security program management, implementation and oversight.  The Cogswell Award is given for outstanding achievement in matters related exclusively to a facility’s security program.  DSS makes the final selections.

Established in 1966, the award is named in honor of the late Air Force Col. James S. Cogswell, the first chief of industrial security within the Department of Defense.  Cogswell was responsible for developing the basic principles of the Industrial Security Program, which include an emphasis on the partnership between industry and government to protect classified information.  This partnership ultimately ensures the greatest protection for the U.S. war fighter and the nation’s classified information.

“Not only are we extremely proud of the award, we take great pains to safeguard our customers’ information,” said Steve Kelly, President of Battelle National Security Global Business.  “This award is recognition for the fact that we have outstanding security on campuses that are challenging.”
