Columbus, Ohio -- Battelle announced today the establishment of a new business segment focused on providing environmental and safety consulting services to the oil and gas industry. As part of the reorganization, the Pipeline Technology Center (PTC), formerly associated with Battelle's energy sector, has been transferred to the Oil and Gas business segment.

Efforts will be led from Battelle's Columbus, Ohio and Boston, Mass. locations and supported by regional offices in California, Seattle, and Geneva, Switzerland. Additionally, Battelle has established a new office in Houston, Texas to service its Houston-area oil and gas clients.

Battelle has worked with oil and gas companies worldwide for many years and aims to strengthen these relationships by organizing Battelle's resources in support of the unique requirements of this client base. Battelle has supported clients in North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, the former Soviet Union, and Southeast Asia.

The newly formed Oil and Gas business segment is being managed by Paul Boehm, Vice President, and is spearheaded by nationally and internationally renowned industry experts, including Boehm, Gregg Douglas, Allen Uhler, Bernhard Metzger, Dean Slocum, Philip Beall, John Brown, Jerry Neff, Brian Leis, Tom Thomas, Jon Olson, Charles Brandt, Tom Bubenik, and Augusto Porta.

Bringing Battelle's innovative and sound science and management approaches to upstream and downstream environmental challenges, the newly formed Oil and Gas business segment provides the oil and gas industry with technical services and expertise focused on their primary areas of concern. These areas encompass environmental and safety issues in support of new projects including exploration and production, pipelines, and refineries, as well as operations support and liability management.

Battelle's specific areas of support include defining and managing environmental and safety liabilities; bringing new projects on line through meeting environmental requirements and operational standards; helping clients operate with high levels of environmental and safety performance supported by Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE) management systems; managing environmental information; and transferring knowledge and technology (through workshops and training).

Environmental areas of expertise include: environmental impact assessment, ecological risk assessment, natural resource damage assessment, environmental monitoring, contaminated site and sediment investigations, environmental forensics, HSE management systems development, greenhouse gas management; and environmental information management systems (EMIS) support. Safety-related capabilities include pipeline integrity management, risk and safety management, emergency response and contingency planning, in-line inspection, and defect assessment and repair.

Current Oil and Gas clients include many U.S.-based multinational companies, gas transmission companies, and national oil and gas companies in Latin America and elsewhere.
