Despite the fact that Columbus is located far from the ocean, Battelle innovations have made their way from our laboratories to the ocean depths.

The Spring 2000 issue of Solutions Update focuses on Battelle's 35 years of providing technology solutions for the U.S. Navy.

Battelle's expertise is internationally recognized in hydraulics, underwater tools and manipulators that are able to function in ocean depths of 20,000 feet.

While much work takes place at ocean test sites, Battelle labs in Columbus boast four hyperbaric chambers and a research diving pool with a five-ton crane.

Battelle scientists and Navy experts have performed ocean engineering research in areas such as ship salvage and oil pollution abatement, surface handling, deep ocean recovery and undersea work systems.

Some recent projects involve innovations to side-look sonar systems and underwater cameras. To learn more about Battelle's work with the Navy, read the new edition of Solutions Update. It also includes information on:

  • Vitex, Inc.: A new subsidiary focusing on flat panel displays for the electronics market.
  • OmniViz, Inc: This new subsidiary is at the forefront of bioinformatics.
  • Global Positioning System Leader: An automotive information gathering system designed to improve transportation.
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory: A UT-Battelle team begins duties as lab managers.
  • NASA Illinois Commercialization Center: Battelle's Great Lakes Industrial Technology Center works with a Chicago area technology park to provide space-age technology.
