BATTELLE WINS CONTRACT AS INDEPENDENT SAFETY ASSESSOR FOR NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT

Modernization of NYCT’s Signaling System With Communication-Based Train Control

 

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Battelle has won a 78-month, $6.7 million contract from New York City Transit (NYCT) to be the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) for the communication-based train control (CBTC) signal system modernization of the Flushing Line and Culver Test Track.

 

Battelle is the lead contractor of an international team that includes TÜV Rheinland Rail Sciences, Turner Engineering Corporation, Transportation Resource Associates, Metro Tech Consulting Services and ClearSy System Engineering (of Paris, France).

 

As the ISA, the Battelle team will provide an independent evaluation of the signaling supplier’s evidence of system safety throughout system development and deployment. The review activities to be performed by the team will provide independent verification that all safety-related requirements have been met. The Culver Test Track program will pose some new challenges in that it will involve the assessment of interoperable advanced train control systems developed by two different suppliers. 

 

Battelle has been conducting independent safety audits and assessments of train control/signaling systems and equipment for transit, freight, and high-speed rail applications for more than 40 years. Its experience and expertise in the area of rail safety has led to Battelle being certified as an accredited independent safety assessment organization by Network Rail in the United Kingdom.  For the past 10 years, Battelle also has been the ISA for NYCT’s Canarsie line, which was the first NYCT line to be equipped with CBTC.
